Sound Machines

How to make sounds with batteries, wires and electronic components? In a series of digital hangouts and workshops, children, teenagers and adults took the chance to try for themselves, making amplifiers, synthesizers, and making their very own sound machines.

Based on Nicolas Collins’ Handmade Electronic Music, simple sound making circuits were built on breadboards. The circuits could also be soldered to take home. Another approach was interfacing the sound machines with Arduino based light organs to have a light show to boot.

The vision of these workshops is a modular approach, where different elements can be built independently of each other, guided by step by step manuals. These modules can then be patched together in a personal way. Hence, the role of the Digital Art Lab is not so much instruction as providing a fertile environment where experimentation and peer teaching can take place.
